Do you love me?
It’s a personal and pointed question. And it is almost always asked in a very high leverage relationship situation. It’s the kind of question we really don’t want to have to deal with. But we’ve all been asked it at some point in time. It may have been posed to us by a friend, a spouse, a child, or a parent. In that tense relationship moment, we were forced to consider the true level of our love toward an important person in our life. Compared to other things or people or interests, we had to assess how much we really loved them.
Now imagine having Jesus ask it. And ask it He did of his friend and disciple Peter—three times, in fact. He didn’t ask it to twist the denial knife a little deeper or create discomfort in front of the other disciples. It was a decision Peter had to assess if he was going to move forward to serve the purposes of Jesus and His kingdom.
Jesus had an important assignment for Peter to fulfill. But he could only do so if he loved Jesus first and most. The cost and sacrifice required could only be accepted and sustained by a heart filled with loving devotion. Peter would eventually answer the question by his bold and unflinching testimony to the person and gospel of Jesus.
We’ve considered some of the hardest sayings of Jesus in our “Outrageous Faith” series. But none are as hard as this simple, personal question. And Jesus asks it of all of us. “Do you love me more than…”
It is no accident that John’s gospel ends with this poignant scene and penetrating question. How that question was answered by Peter and the other disciples was the jumping off point to the spread of the gospel in the book of Acts. Only deep love for Jesus could inspire the activity that brought thousands to faith. Coming to grips with that hard question is still the key to impacting people and our world with outrageous faith.
“Do you love me…?” How you honestly answer that question will determine the character of your faith and the course your future will take.
